To review, the 7 Deadly Sins are: lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, pride except in France where the translation for “lust” is “desire”. Desire is not a sin, but a source of joy, maybe not in American, but certainly in France. As you literate and Biblical types know, there is no 8th Deadly Sin, [...]
In 2011, a heart transplant cost $997,700 while the Nutanix Starter Kit, 1 2U blocks with 3 nodes populated, is only $75,000. Wow! A bargain! For the price of a heart transplant you could buy13 (my lucky number) Nutanix Starter Kits. Yesterday, March 28th, 2012, I chatted with Dheeraj and Mohit at their Technology Drive [...]
“Adde parvum parvo magnus acervus erit” means “Add little to little and there will be a big big pile.” As all you Latin students should know, it is a quote from Metamorphosis by Ovid. As all you Silicon Valley groupies should also know, it is where the name “ADDEPAR” (adde parvum) originated. Ah yes, and [...]
Interviews with Startup Founders, Some Seed, Some Not
Looking for the Next Right High-Tech Startup Investment. I am currently an investor in a robotics startup, ConXTech, located in Hayward, CA. For the past three years, I've been screening high-tech startups to add to my personal portfolio. I hear about 400 startup pitches (in person) every year and am invited to more pitch events and panels than I could possibly attend.
Why Write a Startup Blog? As I would sit through these often 3-6 hour meetings I found certain companies and certain technologies interesting although maybe not a suitable investment for me. I decided to blog about companies I found interesting. This forced me to do research on technology spaces that were outside of my area of expertise.
Is There a Pattern to a Successful Founder? Yes! As Randy Williams, founder of the very successful Keiretsu Forum (largest angel network in the world) always says: "It is the jockey, not the horse." My goal is use my pattern recognition talents to identify the characteristics of a successful founder. This would allow me to recognize one who had no track record yet. As part of this quest, I've also done in person interviews with successful founders who have extensive successful track records. I think I got it, finally, and will be betting real (my) money on these characteristics.
Why Video Poems? At first glance, poetry and high-tech startups would not seem to have much in common, but in fact they do. They represent the intersection between technology and art which are both necessary to create a great company. Poetry requires great attention to detail, recognizing the patterns of successful founders requires the same attention to detail. Some of my video poems are about startup founders (featuring the founder in the video) and some are just beautiful poems with beautiful people in them.
Target Audience: supernerds, techheads, entrepreneurs, venture capitalist and angel investors.
