As Sun Tzu said his seminal military strategy book, The Art of War, written over 2,400 years ago: “Leadership is a matter of intelligence, trustworthiness, humaneness, courage and sternness.” On Sunday, September 15, 2012, I sat down with Dick Wolf, CEO and Founder of Mutu.tv . This was the first time I had a chance to look him in the eyes since I heard his dynamic pitch at JumpStartDays on August 20, 2012. In addition to being an Iowa State champion swimmer, Dick is 6’8″ tall. Yes, he is even taller than Max Shapiro.
Mutu.tv Target Audience? 13-21 years old. This website is definitely for the younger crowd, so even though you may not be part the user target audience, read on, you may be the investor target audience.
Pandora Radio for Videos. Dick is leading the design of a product that doesn’t exist. In case you haven’t noticed we are in the middle of a media explosion. If you visit YouTube, you are drowned by the tsunami videos. Starting with the subcategory of music videos, Mutu.tv uses a patentable social algorithm to introduce the target audience to artists similar to the ones they already like.
Pitch Deck. This one was so good that I have added the link: http://www.authorstream.com/Presentation/dickwolfproducer-1517334-mutu-pitch-deck/
Revenue Model? Mutu.tv has not one, but four viable revenue models for those investors who are interested in making money in addition to having a great time:
- consumer data: $4/user/year (very conservative)
- subscriptions: using Pandora’s conversion rate 3% of the users would subscribe at $1.00/month, a bargain
- advertising: 2 cents per visitor
- commissions: 10% of digital sales
Team? In addition to Dick Wolf, CEO and Founder, there is Dustin Tomhave, Content Manager, Dzernan Klapuh, Web & Graphic Design and a second content manager, Patrick Leedham. Dick has an extensive music background, having designed and founded JP Records and Music Thirsty in Chicago. He also plays keyboard (synthesizer) and composes.
Pitch Competition. Recently, Saturday, September 15th, 2012 to be exact, Dick won the GMIC SV pitch competition at Ground Floor. Congratulations!
Takeaway: Great CEOs are tall. If you don’t believe me, just take a walk through Robert’s Market in Woodside. None are taller than Dick. Dick is an engineering undergraduate, musician, composer, has founded two previous music companies and is one with this market. The discipline and focus from swimming at an elite level is just a bonus. He has positioned his company to be the first mover in the Pandora for video market.
Preview: this the last of the Sun Tzu Series of Blogs. I ended with a music guy which is the perfect introduction to the next series: Bob Marley, Raggae and High Tech.
